Impact Statement Guidance

Economic Impact Statement Representative Text

Reviewers will score your project in part by the number of jobs generated or saved. You will need to explicitly describe the impact your research will have on the economy, and how this will happen in two years. Please elaborate extensively on your application’s plans for hiring and for equipment purchases in Fall/Winter 2009 and in 2010 to demonstrate economic impact. You can also demonstrate this economic impact through detailed timelines and a very clear description of how you will use the money.

Sponsored Programs Administration and the Office of Science and Research have drafted the following draft text on which you can model your own Impact Statements. These are just suggestions (with optional statements in brackets).

This information should go in the "Challenge and Potential Impact" section for challenge grants.

### Our project will result in X full time hires and X part time hires at NYU Langone Medical Center. These new hires will be working in fields where research has been limited during the last 10 years because of funding cuts in the areas of X and X and is now possible because of growth in the areas of X and X. We anticipate that these newly hired staff will be new and early stage researchers who will receive training over the next two years that they need to pursue independent research in X, X and X fields. In addition, the researchers we plan to hire come from diverse academic and professional backgrounds because we want this new project to be multidisciplinary and collaborative.

We will be purchasing major and minor equipment valued at a total of $X, and initiating technical support and maintenance contracts valued at a total of $X over two years. We will be purchasing X from X company, based in X city, X state, USA, at a cost of $X. [This business is a minority-owned US business] and is based [in an urban revitalization zone]. We will also be purchasing a services contract to use the technical expertise of X company, based in X city, X state, USA. This [small] business is based in [a rural redevelopment area], but is rapidly expanding its ability to offer quality technical support through the use of emerging [telecommunications technology]. Our contract is expected to [use the full time of at least one of this company’s staffers, which will encourage them to hire X additional staff in X state].

The scientific discoveries we anticipate are likely to impact the economy positively by improving the productivity of the US workforce by decreasing morbidity due to reduction in the disease burden. Simultaneously, by reducing illness from X, we will reduce the nation’s overall healthcare expenditure. In addition, we anticipate the development of new commercial products in X and X areas that would be manufactured in the US, and would lead to the growth and development of X and X industry. We anticipate that this research will result in a more efficient use of resources for diagnoses, therapy and prevention of disease. ###
