The I^3 Program: Inflammation, Infection and Immunity

Welcome to the nascent webpage of the NYU Langone Medical Center’s new I^3 (I-cubed) Program. We are a self-organized group of faculty spanning numerous departments, institutes, and centers who have a common interest in the dynamic interactions between components of the immune system with each other, with normal tissues, and with invading and commensal microorganisms (pathogens and microbiota): Inflammation, Infection and Immunity.

A common theme that runs across most of our research interests is “inflammation,” which results from the activation of components of the innate or adaptive immune systems, and which serves as a mediator of disease processes ranging from the clinical manifestations of infection to tissue destruction in autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Another common theme is microbial colonization and pathogenesis, which involves the disciplines of genetics, molecular and population biology, and cell biology. The interactions between immune and parenchymal cells with microbes is at the core of many scientific and clinical problems.

Our primary goal is to develop meaningful interdisciplinary connections between scientists working in these related areas through a variety of mechanisms. We plan to develop graduate and post-graduate training programs for basic and clinical scientists, including clinical fellows, and we hope to develop these programs into an NIH-funded training program. We also plan to develop an I3 seminar program, and to hold regular retreats to facilitate exchange of ideas between members of the I3 community. Other ideas are under development.
